‘The House You Built For Us’ is the new single by Tribes of Europe & Barbara Stretch, released on 24th April 2020 across all major digital platforms.
The politically-charged song with a futurist Northern Soul vibe has the classic vocal of the former feminist jazz-punk iconoclast to the fore with the Ely Fallen Angels Choir, led by Max Taylor (MIKA, Lily Allen, Clor), adding a layer of gospel joy.
Tribes of Europe, the alter ego of Fenland-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Martin Elsey, are joined on drums by Andy Gangadeen (Massive Attack, Chase & Status, Jeff Beck) and Chris Taylor (Poison Girls) on co-production duties and the finest bass outside Motor City.
Drawing lyrical inspiration from the current political landscape, Martin explains:
“It seems there have always been a few men who have lusted after power and wealth, and there’s been a much larger group of men that have revered and followed them. In the process we screw the planet over and the poor get poorer, and with globalisation it’s gone into freefall. If we want to survive then society has to evolve. Men need feminism. We all need feminism. No question.”
Previous singles by Tribes of Europe, including the Barbara Stretch collaboration ‘You Don’t Speak For Me’, have enjoyed national support on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio 3‘s Late Junction and various regional shows.
